(1) TRACE: View vesicles with 3D > Points option. A *.wrl file is created (VRML format). Image appears as collection of triangles.
(2) EXPLORER: If you like, change the filename; copy or otherwise make the file available for next steps.
(3) CROSSROADS: Open the *.wrl file, then save as *.3ds file.
(4) 3D STUDIO MAX: Import the *.3ds file (convenient first to hide any other objects in scene).
(5) Select the imported vesicle object, then use Modify > More . > Edit Mesh, and > Edit Face, > angle-Icon. Select all the faces using (main menu) Edit > Select All, then hit CTRL while selecting a single face so as to UNselect it from the rest of the selected faces. Then use Miscellaneous > Hide (back in the Modify submenu) to hide all the selected faces. That single face should now be the only visible remnant of the vesicle object.
(6) Now make a sphere (i.e. radius 0.018) to be distributed to each triangle.
(7) With the sphere selected, goto Compound Objects under the Create tab and choose Scatter. Set the Distribution Object Parameters to Distribute Using All Face Centers. If large numbers of vesicles will be created set the Display Options to Proxy instead of Mesh to save of the number of elements in the scene.
(8) Click on Pick Distribution Object and select the visible remnant of the imported triangle object to make it the distribution object, and distribute spheres to the triangular faces, which should include all those on hidden faces as well.
(7) Then go back to Modify > Edit Mesh > Faces, and select and delete just the unwanted bit.
